Should girls be allowed to work in the construction industry?

Published by under 6D,GraceF

In the past, men have traditionally worked in the construction industry, but now more girls have been getting involved. Girls usually stay home and do the cooking and cleaning but now the girls are making a change. Lots of boys have stopped building because they want eduaction to have a brighter future.

Girls should have the same opportunities as boys. Firstly, most girls do the cooking, cleaning and shopping, but for some girls, thats the thing they hate the most. Boys are usually the ones in the fluro vests and the hard, building hats, but now its the girls. Girls have skills that boys don’t. For instance, girls can multi task and girls are neat and organised. Girls are are more organised and neat, where as boys are more untidy. For example, boys would throw wood in the box, but girls would stack it neatly in the box. Girls should have the same opportunities as boys.

On the other hand construction sites are dangerous work places. Even though girls have lots of skills, boys have skills too. The boys who are builders are usually very bulky and strong, and that means boys can carry more heavy things than girls. If girls try and carry things that they can’t, it leads to injuries. In a construction site all the builders are at risk, from all the dangerous machines, tools and vehicles. Girls might not be treated as an equal on a construction site. For instance, when the boss is choosing someone for a job, he would choose a man because men are tougher and stronger, apparently.

In conclusion I think girls should be allowed to work in the construction industry. Girls are free to be whoever they want to be and have whatever job they like.

CERES 2010

Published by under 6D,GraceF

ceres 026 On the 29th of July year 6 from The Peninsula School went to CERES for a sustainability excursion. CERES is a very environmentally friendly place, where you can learn how to keep the world a better place.

My favourite activity at CERES was the 2030 trail, where you had to follow a trail of decisions to lead to your environmentally friendly future. At the end of the trail you got to see what your future looked like and at the end of my trail I got the worst future you could get. My future was an ugly place with rubbish, pollution, robberies and with a lot of sick people. I chose to have a huge house with lots of electrical appliances that lead me to this future.

I learnt that so many choices in your life can affect the environment. I am going to be more cautious now about how my decisions can affect the environment. I think the point of the this activity was to make the right decisions in life so you can have a great enviromently friendly future.

Holes

Published by under 6D,GraceF

‘Holes’ is a story about a boy called Stanley Yelnats who went to Camp Greenlake, which is a dentension Centre for criminal kids. At Camp Greenlake they have to dig a hole five feet wide and five feet deep, everyday as a punishment. Stanley was at Camp Greenlake for a crime he did not commit, so he blames everything which is wrong on his dirty, rotten pig stealing great, great grandfather.

The main characters in this story are Stanley Yelnats the 3rd, the Warden, Kate Barlow and Zero. Stanley, in this story is cursed. I believe there is no such thing as curses. Also in this story they say that onions can cure everything and in my opinion that is not true either. My favourite character is Zero, who is Stanley’s best friend at Camp Greenlake. I like Zero because he is really cute and works really hard at digging his holes and he never gives up.

I can relate to Stanley in this story from when the boys at Camp Greenlake said mean stuff about him. I have felt homesick like Stanley when he was at Camp Greenlake, without his parents.

I loved ‘Holes’ because it had flashbacks and I’ve never had a interesting book like that before. It was probably the best book I have ever read.

Magic Tricks

Published by under 6D,GraceF

Magic tricks have been improving through time and now magicians are starting to do magic eye tricks.

Scientists are testing out new iliusion tricks that trick your eyes. Scientists have taken normal people into the magic lab to see how your brain and eyes interact to make us see. They wanted to see how your brains interact because if you imagine you’re looking at a horizon from one side to the other, you might think your eyes are moving in a straight line but they’re actually not. You can only move your eyes smoothly when you’re actually tracking something that’s actually moving smoothly. I can look at one computer at the time but not two at the time.I cannot do it because i make jumps called saccades. Saccades are fast eye movements that put strain on the eye. In fact when you experience a saccade you are momentarily blinded.

Magic tricks are all to do with vision and tricking the brain. The aim for the magician is to get the audience to look away. For example with the show trick with the shoe, the magician plays with our vision. We are so busy watching the shoe that we don’t see the magician slip the rock from his pocket into the shoe.

Our brain allows us to be tricked! So next time you are watching a magician, do you think you’ll remember that the magician is actually playing with our vision and tricking our brains?!

Oil Spill

Published by under 6D,GraceF

      14/05/10
Recently there has been has massive Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico in America.  It was caused by a massive explosion by an oil rig that killed eleven people. The explosion was the biggest environmental disaster that America has faced.

On the 22nd of April the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded eighty kilometres off the coast of Louisiana in the gulf of Mexico.  When the oil rig was exploding the whole rig collapsed into thhe ocean.

When the fire was out, a kilometer down  below the surface was the rig pipe still pumping out loads of oil.  The rig pipe was pumping 800,000 of oil litres per day. The oil is called crude oil and its very valuable and fuel companies will go anywhere it get it.  The oil leak is so big you can see it from Space.

The clean up is huge. They’ve tried robot Subs to stop the leak but that didn’t work. So now they’re looking at using large metal containers that could cover the leak and send it safely to the surface. If that doesn’t work they’ll have to drill another hole into the oil well to pump mud in to hopefully block the oil off. Back on land people are putting booms anywhere people can fit them to hopefully stop the spreading oil slick before it hits them.

If they don’t hurry up and clean up the oil spill the environment will be in very great danger!

Boy Overboard review

Published by under 6D,GraceF

Boy Overboard is about Bibi and Jamal trying to escape Afghanistan. They tried to escape Afghanistan because  of the harsh Talaban laws. If you lived in Afghanistan all the girls could only go outside wearing heavy clothes that cover your hole body and a man to go with you. So Bibi and Jamal had to face some really cruel laws.

I think the author wrote boy overboard because he was really disappointed in the way the Taliban treated the Afghanistan’s, so he wrote Boy Overboard.  This book makes me think about all the terrible things in the world that are happening right now.  I admire Bibi in this story because shes not afraid to break the rules sometimes and shes got a really funny personality.

I would recommend Boy Overboard because it is a book you can’t put down because it’s funny and its got a lot of great action that makes you tense. l could read it ten more times.

Sport in India

Published by under 6D,GraceF

Athletes, Netballers and Cricket players are very nervous about going to India to play sport. They are very nervous because there has been many recent terrorist attacks and the security needs improving.

Terrorist attacks are quite big in India and nearby Countries. It occurs quite often. Terrorists do what they do because they want to get their religious or political beliefs across to people.

The Australian Cricket team are quite nervous to go to India to play in the Indian Premiere League. Anything could happen. Terrorists could attack their hotels or anyone could start shooting in the middle of their cricket games. Bert Corkley got dropped from the Australian cricket team to go to India, and he was almost happy about not getting in because its so dangerous in India.

Australian Athletes and Netballers are going to India to play in the Commonwealth Games. At the moment in India they are building a village where all the Athletes and Netballers will live.  The Athletes and Netballers want to keep safe, so the village they’ll live in will have a huge security system.

India is trying very hard to update the security system and to keep people safe.

Wilsons Prom

Published by under 6D,GraceF

Ninety-Nine year sixers were all set to go to Wilsons Prom. Some children were nervous, some were excited. We went to Wilsons Prom for an adventure week and to meet new friends.

When we arrived at Wilsons Prom, straight away we went on a hike. Later on that day we climbed Mt Oberon. It was never ending and tiring to climb, but the view at the top was amazing. Later on that night it was very challenging to sleep in the tents.

The next day we did another hike to squeaky beach and a bike ride to the General store to get a post card to send home. We did Canoeing , which was really run. By now l had nearly got the hang of cleaning my dishes.( which was a really big challenge for me .)Later on that night we went on Bibi’s walk and it was  scary because there was no light and it was night time. There is there is a story about bibi calling out to her dead children on the beach. People say on Bibi’s walk if you listen out you might hear her calling out to hear dead children.

On Wednesday the hightlight of my day was definetly Surfing. I liked it because it was really fun and it was a different experience . It took me a very long time to get the hang of standing up but soon i was able to catch a wave by myself.

On thursday we went on a hike to Lilly Pilly Gully. It was very fascinating to see the beautiful rain forest on the walk. We did some really fun beach games on the beach and we did flags which was really fun. Then we did boogie boarding but l got out early because the water was really cold. Then a big black cloud hit Wilsons Prom. The teachers were call nervous about how wet our tents were going to get and they told us all to but all our belongings in the middle of our tents. The rain did not stop. When it was time to go to bed some kids had to sleep in a caravan cause there tents were so wet. Me and my tent partner were lucky people because our tents got only a little bit wet.

Today we were all very happy to go home. Our tents were still all wet and it still rained a little bit more. We were all muddy and dirty. On the ride home everyone was tired that so the bus was quiet. When we got to school i coulding stop smiling because i was so happy to be home. And thats what happened on our school camp to Wilsons Prom.
