Holes review

Holes is an exciting book, that grabs the readers attention from start to finish. It is filled with conflict, loalty and drama with a twist around every corner. It is based on two stories of past and present that collide and connect throughout the book. The story is set at a dry, humid dessert called Camp Green Lake which is  a jubinile detention centre for teenage boys. They are told they are there to “Build Character” but what they don’t know is that they are digging for something else instead.

The main character is Stanley Yelnats, he is an innocent, overweight, bullied boy who is cursed with bad luck from his no good dirty rotton pig stealing great great grandfather. My favourite character is Hector Zeroni or ZERO  who is a shy, overlooked, brave boy who takes an unexpected friendship with Stanley. There are many characters at Camp Green Lake from Group D, which is filled with boys of all different  personalities, races and each have a nickname given to them from the rest of the group. To The staff at Camp Green Lake who  include Mr. Sir who’s favourite phrase is ” This is not a girl scout camp” and crunches on sunflower seeds. There is Mr.Pendanski the camps counsellor who is meaner then you would first think and ovcourse the Warden who is a selfish red head who has been at Camp Green Lake for how whole life.

The novel is filled with many exciting adventures, some entertaining and life threatening. The most interesting one for me is when Zero gets fed up with Mr.Pendanski, thinking that he is dumb so he wackes him in the head with a shovel and runs away. Stanley is worried about zero not being able to survive, so he goes after him. They luckily find each other and head toward “Big Thumb” in hope to find water and food for survival.

I don’t think i have any connections with the characters but i like how the author Louis Sacher made each character an individual. I love this book because there is never a dull moment and the connections between the  two characters fit perfectly. I really enjoyed following the adventures of Stanley, and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone up for a great read.

Market Day

For Year 6 market day Caitlin Baker and I did chocolate brownies and macramé  anklets, and our stall was called Brownies ‘N’ Beads.

During the process, I have learnt that running a business wasn’t as easy as I thought it was, and has allot of preparation with advertisement, money and planning for the day.

I think Caitlin and I were successful with the way we spent our money, always looking for they cheapest products so we could gain more profit. We tested the brownies to see if they were good and made sure our anklets were of great quality. I think our advertisement was an effective way of showing a product. The day went well with us selling out of Anklets and Brownies even though we did drop the price in the end. We made a profit of $120.60 to give to our charity.

I thought it was really cute because most of the year 1 and prep girls got an anklet because all their friends were.

If I were to do market day again I would prepare myself better to be more flexible with customer needs and opinions, and to keep calm when the stall gets really busy!

I have really enjoyed the process of market day and gained a lot of knowledge that will help me later on in life. If I had the chance to do it again I defiantly would because it was so much fun.

Wilsons Promontory

Our camp began to Wilsons Promontory began early Monday morning , it was set to be a highlight of the year. Once we had got organised the whole of year six collected their bags along with the teachers and helpers, and headed off to Wilsons Promontory. We were all eager to see the prom and experience the camp.

After 3 and a half hours of bus travel we arrived at the Promontory. The bus parked and we went to Tidal River where we had lunch. Once we got to the camp site we were greeted by the camp staff and they gave us a tent demonstration. Luckily, Lachsley and I manages to successfully put up our tent. After helping others complete their tents  we were ready for a big diner of chicken soup, spaghetti bolognese and jelly. With fuel in our bellies we were ready to climb mount Oberon. After allot of sweating and complaining we finally got to the top we all felt a sense of accomplishment. A great way to finish the day.

The following morning our day began with a run along the beach followed by a great breakfast. we walked to Squeaky Beach which didn’t squeak as much as i imagined, then we hurried back to get to surfing on time. After getting our wetsuits fitted we headed down to the beach to begin. I really enjoyed surfing even though i fell off  a few times. with a hand burger in our tummies we  went to the General store to get a treat, and then went on a speedy ride around the Prom. Exhausted, we all enjoyed a dinner of chicken, tomatoe soup and apple crumble. For our evening  activity we did a game could stealth which is like hide and the seek in the dark.

We woke early, to get to the beach to do fitness rotations, and then we had breakfast. After doing Biddies walk we had to leave early to go abseiling and canoeing. I got put into the abseiling group first, it was quite a walk to get to toad rock which was were we were abseiling. It seemed scary at first but in the end it was allot of fun! Even though i grazed my hand. We swap over activities and did canoeing. I was in a canoe with Claudia, it was pretty good because at the end we got to jump in the river. After our tiring morning we had sandwiches for lunch and then got into our bathers and went down to the beach. Our activity was boogie boarding even though we only had about 8 boogie boards. Everybody was splashing about in the waves, boogie boarding and body surfing. After having fun at the beach we had a great dinner of nachos, bangers and mash followed by mini Pavlovas. Our night activity was “trivia night”, where there was about 10 groups and we had to answer random questions and do challenges. It was alot of fun apart from all of the mosquitos, it felt like you were being eaten alive.

Thursday started with a  good breakfast of cereal and pancakes, and soon after we went on a walk to Little Oberon and then To Little Oberon Bay. After our big walk we were all hungry and had mars bar slice and fruit for morning tea and then went to the beach to do activities which included Running in the water, piggy back races, board races and flags. Soon after finishing our activities we had a yum lunch of hot dogs, and got told our electives. I was doing rock ramble first. It was quite interesting learning about the different creatures. My next activity was orienteering, it was by far the best activity. Lachsley, Claudia, Isabelle and I were in a group and we were the first ones to finish and unlock our puzzle to win a bag of lollies.  For our last night we had a great dinner which was cheese and biscuits, lasagna and a really good chocolate cake. After we all had finished our dinner we went down to the beach to do finals of the flags. Claudia and Tom were the crowned the winners. The sun was setting on the beach, a beautiful scenery so the teachers decided it would be great stage for red faces. For red faces  was in a group with Issy, Ted and Nic and we did an awesome dance and after that went to bed.

Lachsley and I woke up and luckily we didn’t get wet from the rain the past night unlike some other tents. Every body enjoyed there last breakfast and soon after we were packing up our tents and were on the bus heading back to School. Half way into our trip we stopped at Leongatha for lunch and some fresh air, and we were back on the bus and before we new it we were back at school. In the end I really enjoyed camp and the experience of camping, i would like to go back to the prom again.
